Targeting a greener Zimbabwe: PUM and EMA join forces

PUM and the Environmental Management Agency of Zimbabwe (EMA) have signed a partnership agreement in the context of the “Green Industry Initiative”. Through this programme, several partners will collaborate with SMEs in implementing sustainable waste management solutions, driving environmental and operational improvements across the country.

In October 2023, PUM expert Frans Föllings, accompanied by Ms Kudakwashe (Kuda) Dhliwayo from the waste consultancy bureau Vital Recycling in Bulawayo, conducted a factfinding mission in Zimbabwe. The objective of this research was to provide PUM with a deeper understanding of the Zimbabwean waste sector, as well as insights into waste management prospects and challenges. Frans and Kuda visited 18 companies and organisations, resulting – so far – in five PUM projects, like the collaboration with WASTiNNOVA, Earthworm Farms and PETRECOZIM. They also engaged closely with the Environmental Management Agency of Zimbabwe (EMA), the leading authority on environmental activities in Zimbabwe. Waste management is a key pillar, promoting the sustainable practice of collecting, transporting, processing, or disposing of, managing, and monitoring various waste materials. According to EMA, there is a need for new policies in waste management.

Kuda, who has since joined PUM as a representative, played a key role in setting up a programme called the “Green Industry Initiative”. This programme aims to improve the environmental sustainability and operational efficiency of SMEs by providing them with expert guidance and capacity building in waste management. Recently, EMA became one of the partners in this programme, and a Partnership Agreement for an initial two years was signed on Tuesday, 27 August. Country Coordinator for Zimbabwe, Carel van Oosterzee, signed the agreement on behalf of PUM, while Mr Aaron Chigona, Director General, signed on behalf of EMA.

PUM and EMA envision a comprehensive programme that provides SMEs with the necessary tools, knowledge, and support to integrate sustainability into their operations. This includes capacity-building workshops, access to expert advice, and the development of tailored sustainability strategies that align with both business goals and environmental regulations. This partnership is a first step in creating a business ecosystem; a conducive environment for SMEs to thrive sustainably.
