Empowering ceramics cooperative in Sri Lanka

Kumbukgete -Kurunegala and Hambu – Girithale are ceramics cooperatives in rural villages in Sri Lanka. Despite having a well-equipped center, the cooperative struggled with underutilisation due to limited knowledge about the machinery.

Through contact with Patrick Roy, a PUM representative in Sri Lanka, they were linked to Wim Compvoets, an expert in inorganic materials, glass, and ceramics. Wim collaborated closely with the artisans, providing training in advanced techniques for storing, blending, and seasoning clay. He also focused on identifying the optimal dryness before firing, troubleshooting kiln operations, and refining finishing methods. In the short time available, Wim also managed to introduce basic glazing techniques.

“It was indeed a valuable opportunity for all our members. The number of families that will benefit in the long run will be so many. We are ever so grateful for this opportunity we got, and we trust that another visit by Mr. Wim can be an immense help for all the members of our project to gain as well as improve their skills and knowledge.”

Moreover, Wim emphasised the importance of maintaining high-quality standards to target international markets.

These trainings have significantly enhanced the artisans’ skills and product quality, positively impacting many families in the community.
