Creating sustainability in seed industry with Molecular Breeding
In agricultural innovation, Tan Loc Phat Seeds (TLP) stands out as a pioneering breeding company with the aim to create sustainable impact on the vegetable seed industry. Understanding the critical challenges posed by climate change, TLP is dedicated to develop high-quality hybrid vegetable varieties that are not only resilient to pests and diseases but also possess the ability to withstand environmental stresses.
Partnering up with PUM
Recognising the need to boost their breeding capabilities, Tan Loc Phat Seeds reached out to PUM. This collaboration aimed to harness the potential of molecular (DNA-based) markers to improve breeding and quality control processes. PUM expert in horticulture, Ben Vosman equipped TLP’s staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively utilise molecular markers in their work. He trained the staff in the use of molecular markers and collaborated with them on getting the newly built lab running.
With a team of six highly motivated researchers and technicians, they developed a plan for the start-up of the molecular lab. This included going through all stages of the molecular marker analysis, DNA isolation, preparation of materials for analysis, PCR reactions, gel-electrophoresis, interpretation of results and troubleshooting. The plan set a strong basis for future breeding. The decision to integrate molecular markers into its breeding and quality control processes marked a significant leap towards enhancing TLP’s breeding cycle’s efficiency and speed. This innovative approach redefined seed development paradigms, addressing the great demands of the seed market.
Envisioning a Greener Tomorrow
In the end, by innovating the integration of molecular markers in vegetable seed breeding, TLP not only sets a new standard for efficiency and quality but also contributes significantly to the global endeavor to combat climate change through sustainable agriculture. TLP also creates local impact as they are setting up training programmes for farmers using their seeds. Empowering farmers with education designed to create a lasting impact ensures that the benefits of this initiative will continue for generations.
